As you can see from FiveThirtyEight.com’s electoral map, at left, if the election were held today, Obama would be our next president.

The problem Obama faces is that the election was not held today. In fact it’s not held for 27 more days, and the McCain campaign has apparently opted to sleaze it’s way into November. Added to that is the fact that the time for new voter registrations for this election has expired virtually everywhere in America.

McCains latest terrible debate performance helped, but the biggest worry Obama has now is that his own supporters get complacent and start to think it’s inevitable, he needs them all to come out and vote, and historically the college crowd has been sketchy.

Obama has rallied them before in caucuses and primaries across the nation, and now the moment of truth is nearly at hand. Can he bring out the vote one more time?

By the looks of the crowd at Belmont University in Nashville Tuesday night, yes he can! The sizeable crowd who stood around outside on the rainsoaked campus to cheer on their candidate was, in my estimation 99% Obama to 1% McCain/Other. This is especially remarkable since Tennessee is a reliable Republican state, that didn’t even go for it’s own native son, Al Gore in 2000.
