Amid escalating violence in Bangkok from the clashes between the Peoples Alliance for Democracy and pro-government protesters, the Thai Army has thrown it’s support behind the PAD and called for new elections in Thailand. General Anupong Paochinda made the suggestion following a conference with high level government officials. (Source)

It’s unknown at this point whether Thai Prime Minister Wongsawat will concede and call for new elections. Also the Peoples Power Party, Wongsawat’s political base, won heavy support from the poor rural regions of Thailand, and may do well again, though Wongsawat himself is unlikely to stay in power should new elections be called.

The PAD believe that Wongsawat is a puppet of his brother-in-law the exiled Thaksin Shinawatra, who was despised by the PAD for his populist politics. The PAD is a conservative Royalist Thai movement, based largely in Bangkok. (More Info)
