In 1994 John McCain’s wife Cindy was addicted to painkillers and even stole from her own charity to feed her habit. She admitted as much publicly in 1999 on national television on Dateline and Good Morning America, in an attempt to get out in front of the scandal. (Source)
This story first came to light because of Tom Gosinski. Tom Gosinski worked for Cindy McCain at a charity she directed called American Voluntary Medical Team, AVMT, and over the course of his employment came to recognize that Cindy McCain was abusing prescription pain medications. As Amy Silverman reported:
Gosinski had already come to suspect that Cindy McCain had gotten volunteer doctors with AVMT to sign prescriptions for her, and had used employees’ names to fill them. Worried his own name had been used (he would eventually learn that it had), Gosinski approached DEA agents in the spring of 1993 to report McCain’s suspicious behavior. The DEA launched an investigation. (Source)
Cindy did no jail time, but instead entered a “diversion” program. 
One can only imagine that her options would have been much narrower had she not been a wealthy heiress and wife of a prominent senator. John McCain claims to have a tough stance against illegal drug use, but apparently not when it comes to his own family.
The Obama campaign says that “families are off limits” but if the shoe were on the other foot what might the Republican candidates say about a wife with a drug problem, and a VP with a pregnant teenage daughter? Family values anyone?

Actually it’s “a very common sentence” if you’re white. Not too many people of color get Diversion even as a first time offender. Not to mention the fact that Cindy was manipulating her volunteers and forging prescriptions in the names of her employees.
That’s rich white people’s affirmative action right there, without a doubt.

I do believe forging prescriptions is a felony. I’m am more than sure that if someone other than a rich white person were caught doing this, they would be in a fed pen someplace. I am truly not surprised in the least bit though.
The McCain camp seems to believe they can insult the intelligence of the average American by running his campaign in such away, or simply by running for president for that matter. Although I don’t believe Obama is the right person to run our government, I truly hope the Average American is not as dumb as the McCain camp wants to believe they are. McCain is blatantly insulting every American who has free thought. Those who don’t have free thought are too oblivious to notice they are being insulted. I just hope there is a greater percentage of free thinkers who understand what is happening. I’m not too optimistic though.

What a joke these people are. Have u taken a look at his daughter lately??? Whole family is a scary joke. And don’t get me started on the Vice Presidential nominee. Against teaching sex education in schools…look at her own daughter… obviously having unprotected sex. HELLO!!! Unprotected sex and lack of knowledge about safe sex does not only cause pregnancy, it also spreads HIV/AIDS AND other STD’S… But I guess she does not care about that shit. I’m not bashing republicans in general, but their running party is one big joke full of morons that don’t care for the people they “want to serve” more like “rule.” Their ideals are one huge oxymoron. God help us if these people run our country…

one needs only to look at europe to see that this country places way too much emphasis on drugs nothing else seems to be more of a focus which is why this countrys going where its going .once the focus on drugs is dropped this country can concentrate on the important issues look at norway highest standard of living in the world and their drugs are legal!Imagine that!!

this statement is ridiculous. My mother has had back problems all her life and she took prescription pain killers for them and also got addicted. however, i blame the doctors prescribing the meds and the suppliers for not noticing an addiction. Doctors love to dope you up on this stuff it seems. I say good job to her for coming out with her addiction and beating it. Even though im not for Mccain..i still feel this statement is bullshit and shouldnt even be considered because it has no outlook on how MCCAIN feels about drug abuse. You cant always tell right away when someone is addicted.

People, this is an election about which candidate is best suited for the job. If you or I were going on an interview for a job, the focus would be our qualifications and experience, not our family and their shortcomings and good or poor choices. If you dig for dirt, you can find it on anybody except Jesus Christ. Get smart Americans! Ignore this garbage, no matter WHICH side it comes from! Dig in and find out the important things, like the candidates voting record, their experience level – experience being where intelligent judgment is formed in any area of life, and look at their current plan for governing the United States of America! So what, I’m a recovering addict, and I’m white and I’m rich. I’ve also been to the pen. I personally don’t think it’s a big deal as long as she is not currently pursuing active addiction. We all have a few things we are not proud of. We have to learn from our mistakes and move on. Try finding something she did in the last year or two and I’ll give it some more credence. For God’s sake that was almost 10 years ago. Just my opinion-I could be wrong.

But now that you brought it up I think every family has either a drug abuser or alcohol. Mrs Mc Caine will fight her addiction for the rest of her life; but she has decided to be sober.God for her to face her addiction and do something about it!

I personally think McCain will be awesome because I can’t think of anyone better to preside over the current mortgage crisis than one of the men involved with starting the last mortgage crisis. (Keating 5)
Also, McCain’s ability to lie with a straight face on television, and give up military information to avoid torture and receive preferential treatment bode well for his ability to deal with difficult issues.
His campaign was not afraid of making video edits of Michelle Obama to make it sound like she said something different than she did, and broadcasting that all over making her sound unpatriotic. It’s ok, because families are off limits.
The bulk of McCain’s resume is crashing airplanes, and that is the best thing I can think of to prepare someone for the presidency of the United States. He doesn’t need to know anything about economics, or even how to turn on a computer. Those things are completely irrelevant.

What doe her prior drug addiction have to do with the way McCain won’t be able to run the country? As to being rich and white..courts rather see people in diversion programs than jail anytime. I hope the woman stays sober one day at a time if she makes it to the white house or not. Her disease and his ability to run the country is like comparing apples to pick up trucks.
